1. Markings & Serial Numbers

  • OEM converters typically have stamped serial or part numbers directly on the shell. Look for numbers that match vehicle brands (e.g., Ford, Honda, Toyota) or codes like L3H8, ACN8, etc.
  • Aftermarket converters may have generic labels, barcodes, or lack markings entirely.

2. Weight, Shape & Shielding

  • OEM converters are often heavier and bulkier due to higher platinum, palladium, and rhodium content.
  • They usually have dense shielding, unique shapes, and often more intricate construction.
  • Aftermarket versions are lighter, simpler in design, and may use lower-grade materials.

3. Location & Installation

  • If your converter is welded in and appears untouched, it’s likely OEM.
  • Clamp-on units or recent weld seams may signal a replacement aftermarket converter.
