Identifying Ford Catalytic Converters for Scrap

How to Identify and Sell Ford Catalytic Converters with RRCats

Ford Logo

Ford catalytic converters can have multiple serial codes, shielded designs, or hidden markings — making them tricky to identify. This page walks you through how to recognize Ford OEM converters, what serial numbers to look for, and how to get a personalized quote from our team at RRCats.

Ford Has Multiple Cats On Their Vehicles

Ford is also well known for having most of its cars with at least 2-4 cats (sometimes 6!) on them. Many of the sets will include two pre-cats and two primary cats. Both of these will have serial codes, and it is also smart to send all of the codes, not parts of each. This will allow for a quicker quoting process and more accurate prices.

Common Ford Models We Scrap:

  1. F-Series Trucks
  2. E-Series Vans
  3. Escape
  4. Raptor
  5. Explorer

Common Ford Serial Numbers

Ford catalytic converters have multiple codes on them. They often have 9-14 digit serial codes, usually broken into three parts. When finding the correct code, these parts could confuse you, so we ask you to send all the parts of the cat to help expedite quoting.

For example, 5F250 may look like a serial number, but it is generally a generic number for them. After the 5E212, other sets of numbers will not always get entered in the order they appear. The order usually is:

  • #1 | #2 | #3
  • 4-Digit – 5-Digit – 2-Digit
  • Example: XXX – 5F250 – YY

When sending your serial numbers, put them in this order. #2, #1, and #3

Common Scrap Ford Catalytic Converters:

  • Serial #: XL345E214JD – Ford F150
  • Serial #: 2L2A5E242VA – Ford Explorer
  • Serial #: F4A23AA – Ford Grande Marquis
  • Serial #: YL3C5G218AA – Ford Expedition
  • Serial #: F7CC – Ford Escort
  • Serial #: 1F1C5E212BA – Ford Taurus

Sometimes, the Ford serial numbers are hidden behind shields, and the shield must be cut to reveal the whole serial number.

The Ford Torpedo Cats have inside them what we call Biscuits. The more biscuits, the more honeycomb material, and the more they could be worth. You will hear these referred to as 2, 3, 4, etc. biscuit Catalytic Converters.

Our Team May Also Call Them “Torpedos.”

Ford Catalytic Converters could also be qualified as “torpedo” converters and are typically much larger than regular catalytic converters. These torpedo units are going to have very distinct shapes and designs. You can learn more about Ford Torpedo Catalytic Converters here.
