Identifying GMC (GM) Catalytic Converters for Scrap

Sell Your Catalytic Converters to RRCats

GMC catalytic converters are commonly found in trucks, SUVs, and heavy-duty utility vehicles, making them a valuable find for scrappers. While they share some similarities with other General Motors (GM) brands—like Chevrolet, Buick, and CadillacGMC converters have unique characteristics that can help you identify them quickly and accurately. Knowing what to look for can ensure you get the best value when selling to RRCats.

Recognizing GMC Branding & Part Numbers

GMC catalytic converters are typically marked with distinct identifiers, making them easier to spot:

  • GMC Stamping: Look for the “GMC” name stamped directly onto the converter shell or etched into the heat shields.
  • GM Part Numbers: These often begin with “GM” followed by 7–9 digits
    • GM25130887,
    • GM12643927.
  • Shared GM Markings: Some converters may be stamped “GM,” which is a common marking shared across Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, and GMC. In these cases, identifying the vehicle model is key.

Identifying Common Shapes & Constructions

GMC catalytic converters are built for durability, reflecting the brand’s focus on trucks and heavy-duty vehicles:

  • Larger, Rugged Housings: Especially common on Sierra, Yukon, and HD models.
  • Multiple Converters per Vehicle: V8 engines often have two or four converters—smaller pre-cats near the engine manifold and larger main converters along the underbody.
  • Heavy-Duty Heat Shields: These are common to protect the converters from debris and damage during off-road or high-load use.

How GMC Converters Differ from Other GM Brands

While GMC shares many parts with other General Motors brands, their converters have distinct features:
