Identifying Subaru Catalytic Converters for Scrap

How to Identify and Sell Subaru Catalytic Converters with RRCats

Subaru Logo

Over time, Subaru has also done a much better job improving its identification systems for its catalytic converters. They have started including serial codes or part numbers on their cats, but you have to know where to look. Sometimes, these codes are located under the shields or hidden behind the shield altogether.

Removing the shields (do not throw them away, as they may be stamped on them) will increase your chances of finding the serial codes more easily and quickly.

Most Subarus Have Two Catalytic Converters

Many Subarus, if not most, have two catalytic converters on them. The first unit is the main cat, followed by a pre-cat. Both of these units have excellent scrap value, and by finding the serial codes, you could sometimes double the quoted price of your cats.

Subaru catalytic converters are commonly part of a dual-cat system, where one unit is smaller and the other has a more rounded, bean-like shape. These converters can sometimes be confused with other foreign cats, but the unique shape and stamped codes help identify them correctly.

Serial Number Pattern on Subaru Catalytic Converters

Often, they have the Subaru name stamped on them and a serial number on the shield. Below are some examples; you can click the link below to watch our video.

Serial numbers on Subaru converters are usually stamped into one of the corners of the converter body. They may be subtle, so check all edges carefully. These serials often start with sequences like FCFH1 or variations of RCF, followed by additional digits or letters.

Serial Number Examples:

  • FCF-XX
  • RCF-XXX
  • FC-XXX

Scrap Subaru Catalytic Converters & Pre-Cats

Subaru catalytic converters often have pre-cats attached, which affect pricing. In this video, Tom explains where to find serial numbers on Subaru catalytic converters and how pre-cats differ in value from standard converters. Make sure to get both priced separately for an accurate quote.
