Alabama Catalytic Converter Laws

Selling Catalytic Converters in Alabama

If you’re in Alabama and have a catalytic converter to sell, there are a few things to keep in mind. Like many states, Alabama has passed laws to help prevent converter theft — but legal sales are still possible if you follow the rules.

What the Alabama Law Says

Alabama requires that used, detached catalytic converters can only be bought by registered secondary metals recyclers. Sellers may need to show:

  • A valid photo ID

  • Proof that they legally own the converter (like a vehicle title or registration)

  • The VIN and part number from the vehicle it came from

Cash payments are limited — most buyers must pay by check or electronic transfer.

These laws are part of Alabama Code § 13A‑8‑37.3, passed in 2022.

Can You Still Sell Your Converter?

Yes! If your catalytic converter is legally owned, you can still sell it — even with Alabama’s rules in place.

RRCats works with both individuals and businesses in Alabama. We’ll guide you through what paperwork is needed, and help you ship your converter safely and legally.
