Kansas Catalytic Converter Laws

Selling Catalytic Converters in Kansas

Kansas has taken a strict stance on catalytic converter transactions, especially in light of rising theft rates. The passage of House Bill 2326 has introduced even tighter regulations under the Scrap Metal Theft Reduction Act. This guide outlines what Kansas residents need to know — and how selling to RRCats (a New Jersey-based buyer) offers a legal and simplified alternative.

What Kansas Law Says About Catalytic Converters

1. Converters Are Regulated Scrap Metal

Catalytic converters are now officially classified as regulated scrap metal, subjecting them to Kansas’s scrap transaction laws and enforcement protocols.

2. Certain Converters Cannot Be Purchased

Dealers are prohibited from buying converters that:

  • Have defaced or removed serial numbers.
  • Show owner-applied paint or markings.
  • Have altered make/model/manufacturer info.

3. Ban on Precious Metal Dust

It’s illegal to sell or buy converter dust or by-products that contain platinum, palladium, or rhodium.

4. Dealer Recordkeeping Required

Dealers must maintain transaction records, including seller identity, converter details, and payment info, available to law enforcement upon request.

5. Law Extended Through 2028

These rules remain in effect until at least July 1, 2028, under the updated Scrap Metal Theft Reduction Act.

Selling to RRCats from Kansas

Selling locally in Kansas comes with heavy legal oversight. But because RRCats is based in New Jersey, Kansas residents can legally ship used catalytic converters out-of-state — without the burdens of local compliance.

Why Choose RRCats:

  • Legal alternative to Kansas resale laws
  • Easy shipping and transparent pricing
  • No dealer registration or in-state red tape
