Selling Catalytic Converters in Maine

If you’re based in Maine and considering selling a removed catalytic converter, it’s important to follow the state’s stricter tracking and marking laws. Below is a clear overview of what Maine requires — and how selling to RRCats can offer a compliant alternative.

What Maine Law Says About Catalytic Converters

Under Title 29‑A § 1113 and related laws: L.D. 796 (Public Law 2021, c. 660) sets out extensive rules governing removal, marking, sale, transport and disposal of catalytic converters.

  1. Engraving Requirement: Converters must be permanently engraved with the vehicle’s VIN or the dealer’s license and stock number before being sold or disposed of.
  2. Who Can Buy or Sell: Only licensed recyclers can legally buy or sell detached catalytic converters. Individuals are restricted from selling unless the converter is properly marked and traceable.
  3. Recordkeeping and Reporting: Licensed buyers must keep detailed records for up to 5 years and report transactions to the state within 10 days.
  4. Transporting or disposing of unmarked converters is prohibited. Final handlers must document how the converter was processed.
