Mississippi Catalytic Converter Laws

Selling Catalytic Converters in Mississippi

If you’re in Mississippi and looking to sell a catalytic converter, it’s important to understand the laws in place. Like many other states, Mississippi has enacted regulations to combat catalytic converter theft, but legal sales are still allowed when you follow the correct steps.

What the Mississippi Law Says

Mississippi law limits who can sell or buy detached catalytic converters. Under Miss. Code Ann. § 97-17-71, sellers must:

  • Provide a valid government-issued photo ID
  • Show proof of ownership, such as a vehicle title or bill of sale
  • Present the VIN from the vehicle the converter came from

Buyers, including scrap metal dealers, must:

  • Record the seller’s information and details about the catalytic converter
  • Keep these records for a specified time period
  • Report suspicious transactions to law enforcement

Cash transactions are generally discouraged or prohibited to increase traceability.

Can You Still Sell Your Converter?

Yes! If your catalytic converter is legally owned and you can provide documentation, it is completely legal to sell it in Mississippi.

RRCats helps both private sellers and businesses in Mississippi navigate these laws easily. We make sure all legal and shipping requirements are handled properly.
