Montana Catalytic Converter Laws

Selling Catalytic Converters in Montana

If you’re in Montana and have a catalytic converter to sell, there are some important rules to keep in mind. Montana has passed laws to help reduce converter theft — but you can still sell it legally when you follow the requirements.

What the Montana Law Says

Under Montana’s law (House Bill 255, which became effective in 2023) the following apply:

  • A seller who is not a licensed salvage metal dealer may not sell more than one detached catalytic converter to a salvage metal dealer in a day.
  • A salvage metal dealer may not provide payment (or consideration) to a seller until at least 72 hours after the most recent transaction with that seller.
  • For transactions involving a catalytic converter, the dealer may pay no more than $30 in cash or stored value device or electronic funds; additional payment must be by check.
  • A person commits the offense of illegal transportation of catalytic converters if they knowingly transport more than one detached catalytic converter without the required acquisition record. Penalties include a fine up to $5,000 and/or up to 1 year imprisonment.
  • Dealers must maintain detailed acquisition records (including seller ID, vehicle used, description of property, amount paid) for at least 2 years; records must be available for law enforcement.

Can You Still Sell Your Converter?

Yes! If you own the converter legally and you have documentation, you can sell it — even in Montana, which has stricter rules.

RRCats accepts converters from individuals, mechanics, and businesses in Montana. We’ll help you with the required documentation and ensure your shipment is handled correctly.
