Nebraska Catalytic Converter Laws

Selling Catalytic Converters in Nebraska

If you’re in Nebraska and have a catalytic converter to sell, it’s important to know the rules. While Nebraska has passed laws to deter theft of converters, you can still sell yours legally — as long as you follow the state’s requirements.

What the Nebraska Law Says

Nebraska law (see Neb. Rev. Stat. § 69‑401 et seq.) treats detached catalytic converters as “regulated metals property.” Key points include:

A converter detached from a vehicle is considered regulated metal. Sellers must provide valid photo ID and buyers must keep detailed transaction records. For deliveries of catalytic converters, the buyer/broker must capture a right‐index fingerprint, a photo or video of the item, and pay by check—not cash—if certain thresholds are met. Records must be retained for at least 1 year and made available for law enforcement.

Can You Still Sell Your Converter?

Yes! If you legally own your catalytic converter and you can provide the required ID and documentation, you can sell it — even under Nebraska’s regulated structure.

RRCats works with both individual sellers and businesses in Nebraska. We’ll walk you through the documentation, shipping, and payment process to ensure everything is compliant.
