New Mexico Catalytic Converter Laws

Selling Catalytic Converters in New Mexico

If you’re in New Mexico and have a catalytic converter to sell, it’s essential to be aware of the state’s rules. New Mexico has passed laws to help prevent converter theft — but you can still sell yours legally if you follow the proper process.

Sell Your Converter Today

What the New Mexico Law Says

Under Senate Bill 133 (2023) amending NMSA § 57‑30‑2.4:

  • A second‑hand metal dealer must obtain a photo or copy of the seller’s ID, proof of ownership or affiliated vehicle, and an image of the catalytic converter.

  • The dealer must maintain transaction records for a minimum of three years.

  • The law prohibits the purchase of detached catalytic converters unless the seller is legally entitled to sell them.

Can You Still Sell Your Converter?

Yes! If your catalytic converter is legally yours and you have the necessary documentation, you can still sell it — even with New Mexico’s new rules in place.

We at RRCats assist both individuals and businesses in New Mexico. We’ll help you with the required paperwork, ensure compliant shipping, and ensure you receive the payment you deserve.
